A BRICC Wellness Centre program.
Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork based on theoretical framework of traditional Chinese medicine. Shiatsu techniques include massage, assisted stretching and joint mobilisation.
A Shiatsu practitioner will press with his or her fingers, thumbs, and palms on the acupuncture points and energy pathways or meridians on your body. Pressure on these vital points is intended to stretch and open pathways for the body's flow of qi.
The program runs on Thursdays between 9.30am-3.30pm.
What is Shiatsu?
Literally meaning "finger pressure", Shiatsu uses light and firm pressure and a range of gentle stretches to harmonise and treat imbalance. Practitioners generally work along the lines of energy through the body called Meridians, and with specific work on points located on these meridians.
What are the benefits?
One of the main reasons that people with cancer use shiatsu is that it makes them feel good. Shiatsu therapists promote the therapy as a natural way to help you relax and cope with
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Pain
- Nausea
Generally, therapists believe that freeing your energy flow can help to lift your mood and improve your wellbeing.
Some people with cancer use shiatsu to help control symptoms and side effects such as poor appetite, sleep problems, pain, and low mood. They say that it helps them to cope better with their cancer and its treatment. After a shiatsu treatment people feel very relaxed and have higher energy levels.
