A DEXA scan, also known as a Bone Densitometry test, is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss.
A DEXA scan is a non-invasive medical test that is effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.
What to expect?
No preparation is necessary for this examination.
You must not have had Nuclear Medicine, CT or certain X-rays for 2 weeks prior to your Dexa scan.
Please take all your medications as normal.
What does a Dexa Scan cost?
There may be a cost for a Dexa scan, if you do not qualify for a Medicare rebate.
Our staff will run through a questionnaire with you and advise you prior to the commencement of the scan, if you are not eligible for the rebate.

Do I need to bring my referral?
Yes, we are unable to do your scan without a referral. If you forget to bring your referral, we will have to reschedule your appointment.
I have a referral for another imaging provider, can I have my test at Grampians Health Ballarat Radiology?
Yes, we accept all referrals/requests.
Where do I go for a Dexa scan?
Dexa scans are performed at the Queen Elizabeth Centre at 1111 Dana Street. Follow the signs to BreastScreen / Womens Health Centre.
Is there a drop off area and what parking is available?
Drop-off area and 2-hour parking available on Dana street.
Do I need to make an appointment for a Dexa scan?
Yes, bookings are essential for Dexa Scans.
How long does it take for my results to come through?
Please allow up to 2 working days for non-urgent results to be sent to your referring doctor. We are unable to give your results to you.
