Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy (or radiotherapy) uses high-energy radiation (x-rays) to damage and kill cancer cells. It can be used on its own or together with other cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy or surgery. A machine called a linear accelerator uses precise technology to target your treatment to a specific area of your body.

Your treatment team includes a Radiation Oncologist (Specialist Doctor), Radiation Therapists, Radiation Oncology Nurses, Medical Physicists and Administrative Staff. You may also be referred to Allied Health professionals such as Social Workers, Dietitian, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists or Exercise Physiologists.

BAROC treats a wide variety of body areas. Our Radiation Oncologists have extensive experience in managing a range of different cancers. These include, but are not limited to:

We pride ourselves on providing ongoing support upon completion of your treatment. These services are offered by the staff at (BRICC) and the professional staff of the Wellness Centre. 

In addition to providing ongoing care in Ballarat, we also operate the Stawell Austin Radiation Oncology Service (SAROS), which includes a fortnightly Radiation Oncology clinic for consultations and a superficial radiotherapy treatment on Tuesdays and Fridays.

A referral letter from your General Practitioner (GP) or your specialist medical practitioner is required to access this service.

After we receive this letter, we will be in contact with you to arrange your initial consultation.

What to bring to your Initial Consultation:

• Medicare card
• Health Care Card
• DVA Card
• Information on any implanted devices (pacemaker, prosthesis etc.)
