Meet our frontline workers: Bree
Meet one of our frontline workers Bree, who is part of our screening team.
We currently have screening requirements in place for all persons entering Ballarat Health Services sites.
Bree is one of many Ballarat Health Services employees whose roles have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She’s a student nurse, and she never imagined that this is what her final year of study would look like.
“I never would have guessed that I would be on the frontlines of a pandemic,” Bree said. “This is an odd and strange curveball that no one has ever encountered before, and it’s been an interesting orientation to being a nurse.”
You might not recognise her in her PPE, but Bree is now working as part of the screening team at the Drummond Street entrance to the Base Hospital. She says joining the screening team has given her a new perspective on why the requirements are in place, and why they’re important.
“When you’re screening people, you realise how big a part the process plays in limiting the risk of COVID-19 transmission in the hospital,” Bree said. “I know it takes an extra couple of minutes for those who just want to get started at work, go to an appointment, or visit a loved one, but we’re there to keep everyone safe.”
She says she understands the frustration of some of the people entering, but would like to remind the community of the reasons why the screening is being done.
“The pandemic has been a really tough time for a lot of people, and we see a rollercoaster of emotions on a lot of people who come through for testing,” she said. “Some people are frustrated, grumpy or impatient with the screening process, but the rules are in place for a reason. It’s not just for the safety of our staff and patients, it’s for the safety of everyone who enters the hospital.
“We’re not just scanning staff, we’re scanning contractors, patients and visitors too.”
Bree aims to make each interaction as seamless as possible, and says she likes to improve peoples’ days where she can.
“We’re not trying to hold you up, but we need to ensure all the boxes are ticked before we can let you enter. It’s really nice when someone who enters the building looking a bit grumpy walks away with a smile.”
When Bree isn’t working with the screening team or studying, she likes to go for long walks and hang out with her family.
Our frontline staff are working hard to protect those most vulnerable and limit the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on Ballarat Health Services sites. Now, more than ever, is the time to show some kindness and #BeKindBallarat.
