A career change to Security has Kate placed exactly where she wants to be
Kate Connor never thought she would be a Security Guard. But a fortuitous career change has Kate placed exactly where she wants to be.
It would be seven years this December since Kate joined the Security Team at Grampians Health Ballarat. Kate originally worked in the cleaning business for 30 years and after it was sold, she needed to consider a career change.
A local job network where Kate was registered whilst looking for her next role suggested Security as one of the careers. At 54, she thought she may be past work in security and was not keen on working in pubs and clubs. But soon Kate learned that Security has many different facets.
Kate completed her Certificates 2 and 3 in Security, Monitoring and Screening and then a position as a Security Guard at Grampians Health came up. “I applied for it, not thinking that I would get it,” said Kate. “I am placed at the Queen Elizabeth Centre, which I thoroughly enjoy. I like working here.”
“The best part of my day is walking around and talking to people. Just being out there and being seen,” said Kate. “If I can help to make someone feel better, like getting a coffee, going and finding things, just things like that, I’ll do it,” she said.
The role can be challenging and even confronting at times. Within the first month of Kate working in her new role, she experienced demanding situations. However, immense support from her team helped her through these situations, “I couldn’t have asked for more. All the support was offered.”
Justin Peart, Manager, Security said “The team is trained across all areas of our Security Operations.
“Each day is unique and every code response has its own challenges. At Grampians Health we support our team to feel empowered and share their ideas. Our team is increasing in size and now is a great time to join us,” he said.
“We offer paid attendance training courses including Mental Health First Aid and Safety Interventions as well as on-site refresher training for staff. Currently we would love to hear from those, who are interested in pursuing a career in Security.”
The Security Officer’s role is essential in the delivery of a safe and secure environment for staff, patients, visitors, and other members of the public at Grampians Health.
Kate’s advice for those, and particularly women, who are considering a career in security is to “not to be afraid because you have always got support. You have got the team you work with to support you. They are a good team of people.
“I do enjoy working here, it’s six years that I feel I haven’t wasted. I have enjoyed what I do. Hopefully, I can finish my work years out here.”
